51. Ece Temelkuran in Conversation with Commissioner Kasari Govender

BC’s Human Rights Commissioner, Kasari Govender, hosts acclaimed Turkish author and journalist Ece Temelkuran for a vital in-person conversation and episode of the Beyond the Headlines series. They will discuss Temelkuran’s latest book, Nation of Strangers: Rebuilding Home in the 21st Century, a Commissioner’s Book Club selection, which considers a world wherein people are increasingly “unhomed.” Exploring the experiences of refugees and exiles, and those who feel politically alienated, morally estranged, economically excluded, or no longer able to recognize the countries and systems around them, they’ll discuss how we might rebuild “home” through our relationships and the strength we find with one another. This event is free to attend in-person or via livestream.

Kasari Govender

KASARI GOVENDER is B.C.’s first independent Human Rights Commissioner. Her role is to lead promotion and protection of human rights in British Columbia. Commissioner Govender's work centres listening deeply to people in B.C. to inform educational materials, policy guidance, inquiries, interventions, community-based research and other work that protects marginalized communities, addresses discrimination and injustice and upholds human rights for all.

Ece Temelkuran

ECE TEMELKURAN is an award-winning Turkish writer, political thinker, and public speaker whose work has been published worldwide. Her novels have been published in several languages and adapted to the stage. After she left her country in 2016, Temelkuran began writing in English. Her first book in this language, How to Lose a Country, received international praise.
