This signature event returns with the luminous ideas and fascinating readings you’ve come to expect—in a comfortable new venue with an elevated dining experience. We’re thrilled to bring Food for Thought to the Dockside Restaurant at the Granville Island Hotel. Enjoy a delicious continental breakfast with coffee and tea as seven authors of intriguing nonfiction explore topics at the forefront of our minds: Brian Goldman (The Casino Shift), Kirsten Johnson (Humanitarienne: A Doctor’s Stories from the Conflict Zone), Turi King (The Secrets of our DNA), Justin McElroy (Searching for the Best Place on Earth), Wiley Wei-Chiun Ho (The Astronaut Children of Dunbar Street), and Jody Wilson-Raybould (The Inbetween Leader). DR. BRIAN GOLDMAN is an ER doctor and a bestselling author. His CBC Radio show and podcast, White Coat, Black Art, has been on the air for over a decade. A sought-after speaker, he is also the host of The Dose, a CBC podcast about personal health. Brian Goldman lives in Toronto with his family.

KATHRYN GRETSINGER is an associate professor of teaching at the School of Journalism, Writing, and Media. She is a long-time public broadcaster at the CBC, and has been named one of North America’s top innovative journalism educators.

WILEY WEI-CHIUN HO has published short stories and essays in PRISM international, Ricepaper Magazine, River Teeth, Room and several anthologies, and was a finalist for the 2021 Jim Wong-Chu Award for Emerging Writers (presented by the Asian Canadian Writers’ Workshop). She lives in North Vancouver, BC.

Kirsten Johnson

Kirsten Johnson

DR. KIRSTEN JOHNSON is the founder and director of Humanitarian U, a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing humanitarian training and response, and has worked with international organizations such as Médecins Sans Frontières, the Canadian Red Cross and the World Health Organization. She has conducted groundbreaking research on sexual- and gender-based violence in conflict zones. She received the Segal Centre’s Janusz Korczak Award for her work on protecting the rights of children in conflict and the Award of Excellence for her work in global health by the College of Family Physicians of Canada. Dr. Johnson is a member of the Explorers Club and a fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society. After two decades working around the world in the humanitarian sector, Dr. Johnson now lives and works in Montréal, and continues to work regular locums in Nunavik and in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Turi King

Turi King

PROFESSOR TURI KING is renowned for presenting complex findings on DNA and genetic science in an accessible and compelling way and has won awards for her public engagement in science. Having grown up in Ontario and British Columbia, she is now Director of the Milner Centre for Evolution at the University of Bath and was previously Professor of Genetics and Public Engagement at the University of Leicester. She is an Honorary Fellow of the British Science Association, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, a Member of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences and a Member of the International Society for Forensic Genetics. She is well known for her academic work leading the genetics and identification of Richard III, advising on the case of Mary Jane Kelly (the last victim of Jack the Ripper) and leading the project on sequencing Hitler’s genome.

JUSTIN MCELROY is an award-winning journalist and municipal affairs reporter. Known for his keen insights, he has covered local politics across BC for CBC News since 2015. In 2024, he took a year off to visit 52 countries in 52 weeks, exploring what makes a city “world-class” through the eyes of a first-time globetrotter. McElroy lives in Vancouver, BC.

The Honourable DR. JODY WILSON-RAYBOULD, PC, OBC, KC, is the former minister of justice and attorney general, a member of We Wai Kai Nation, a lawyer, a leader among Canada’s Indigenous Peoples, and the author of four bestselling books. She lives in Cape Mudge, BC.
