Bestselling author Jason Stanley started teaching at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy as part of a small exodus of former Yale professors, all experts in authoritarianism, who left the United States in light of the Trump administration’s attacks on civil liberties. In the United States and elsewhere across the globe, democracy faces new threats from authoritarian movements. To understand this assault, we must understand the lessons of our past. In Erasing History, Stanley exposes the true danger of authoritarianism’s attacks on institutions of education, historically places of critical inquiry and preservation of common memory. He’ll illustrate that hearts and minds are won in our schools and universities—places that democratic societies across the world are now ill-prepared to help defend against fascism. DAVID MOSCROP is a politics writer, commentator, and podcast host. A contributing writer for The Walrus, his work has also appeared in publications including The Globe and Mail, The Washington Post, The Toronto Star, Time Magazine, The New Statesman, and The Guardian. He holds a PhD in political science from the University of British Columbia and is currently an editor at McClelland & Stewart. He lives in Ottawa.

JASON STANLEY is the Bissell-Heyd-Associates Chair in American Studies in the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto. He is the author of seven books, including How Fascism Works and How Propaganda Works. His writing on authoritarianism and democracy has appeared in The Guardian, The New York Times, Project Syndicate, and many other publications around the globe.
