Seven authors of intriguing nonfiction titles explore topics at the forefront of our minds, in this popular returning event where TED Talk meets café social, with a morning snack included. Scott McIntyre, co-founder of Douglas & McIntyre, shares his story of making a life in Canadian publishing in A Precarious Enterprise, while Vogue writer Christian Allaire’s From the Rez to the Runway takes us behind the scenes of the fashion industry. Science writer Jay Ingram (The Science of Pets) and Women’s Prize finalist Chloe Dalton (Raising Hare) both delve into the meaningful bonds between humans and animals. Eve Lazarus explores a forgotten tragedy in Beneath Dark Waters, an account of the 1914 sinking of the Empress of Ireland; Nilo Tabrizy spotlights Iran’s recent women-led uprising in For the Sun After Long Nights. CHRISTIAN ALLAIRE is an Ojibwe, French and Italian writer who grew up on the Nipissing First Nation reserve in Northern Ontario. He is currently a senior fashion and style writer for Vogue, where he works to bring Indigenous design and stories to the forefront of fashion. Allaire is based in Brooklyn, New York.
CHLOE DALTON is a writer, political adviser and foreign policy specialist. She spent over a decade working in the UK Parliament and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and has advised, and written for and with, numerous prominent figures. She divides her time between London and her home in the English countryside. Raising Hare is her first book.
KATHRYN GRETSINGER is a journalist, Associate Professor of Teaching at the University of British Columbia School of Journalism, Writing and Media. For more than three decades, she has contributed as a host, writer broadcaster and a trainer at the Canadian Public Broadcasting Corporation. Social justice is a priority for her personally and professionally as a teacher and journalist. She loves to listen and participate in interviews including making dozens of appearances as a moderator at the Vancouver Writers Fest.
JAY INGRAM is a bestselling author and acclaimed science communicator, known for hosting Quirks & Quarks and Daily Planet. A Member of the Order of Canada, he has won major awards, authored 20 books, and cofounded Calgary’s Beakerhead festival. He lives in Victoria, B.C. Visit his website at JayIngram.ca.
EVE LAZARUS is a reporter, author, and the host and producer of the Cold Case Canada true crime podcast. Her books include the BC bestsellers Cold Case BC; Murder by Milkshake; Blood, Sweat, and Fear; Cold Case Vancouver; and Vancouver Exposed. She lives in North Vancouver, BC.
SCOTT MCINTYRE has been influential in Canada’s fight for better publishing policy for over 40 years, serving on numerous boards and helping shape a UNESCO treaty that enshrines the principle of cultural diversity within international law. A member of the Order of Canada and British Columbia, he also holds an honorary degree from Simon Fraser University. He lives in Vancouver, BC.
KAROLINA RAMQVIST is one of the most influential writers and feminists of her generation in Sweden. She has written five novels to date and is widely celebrated for her powerful ability to provoke quiet yet fierce questions rather than provide loud and easy answers. In 2015 Ramqvist was awarded the prestigious P. O. Enquist Literary Prize for her novel The White City (Grove).
NILO TABRIZY is a video reporter for The Washington Post's Visual Forensics team. Before joining The Post, she worked as a video journalist at the New York Times, where she covered Iran, race and policing, and abortion access. She was also a reporter at Vice News covering drug policy and harm reduction.
