15. Iain Reid and Ellie Foumbi: Horror in Hollywood

Bestselling author Iain Reid is no stranger to the film industry. His uncanny, page-turning thrillers have attracted major film adaptations, with such names attached to them as Charlie Kaufman and Saoirse Ronan. Even so, A New Kind of Clean represents a new level of collaboration between himself and award-winning filmmaker Ellie Foumbi. Originally envisioned as a film, the work became a novel as the two creators passed it back and forth, jointly crafting a masterwork of philosophical horror that follows a desperate aspiring actress who must weigh what she’s willing to sacrifice to reach her dreams. Spectacular on-stage visuals will set the tone for this otherworldly conversation. Moderated by Tom Charity.

Tom Charity

TOM CHARITY has been the year-round programmer at the VIFF Centre since 2009. As a film critic, he has written for many international publications, including Time Out London, CNN, Sunday Times, Cinema Scope, the Vancouver Sun and Sight & Sound. He is the author of several books about film, including John Cassavetes: LifeWorks.

Ellie Foumbi

ELLIE FOUMBI is an award-winning screenwriter and director. She was born in Cameroon and grew up in Westchester, New York. After completing an MFA at Columbia University’s School of the Arts, she made her debut feature film, Our Father, the Devil, which received universal critical acclaim. She was named one of 25 New Faces of Independent Film by Filmmaker Magazine.

IAIN REID has written five books, including the New York Times bestselling novel I’m Thinking of Ending Things, which has been translated into more than twenty languages and was adapted into a Netflix film by Oscar winner Charlie Kaufman. His second novel, Foe, was also adapted to film and his third novel, We Spread, was nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Award.
