54. Beneath Dark Waters: Eve Lazarus in Conversation
Renowned local historian and author Eve Lazarus brings history vibrantly to life in her bestselling books, and in her popular talks on everything from Vancouver’s quirky history to murder. Her latest work of nonfiction is another epic and absorbing chronicle, recounting the worst maritime disaster to occur during peacetime in Canadian history—which claimed the lives of more passengers than the Titanic. Beneath Dark Waters unearths the very human drama of the RMS Empress of Ireland, which sank in 1914 en route from Quebec City to Liverpool, England. Drawing on a trove of historical documents, as well as interviews with experts and descendants of the passengers, Lazarus will weave together a stirring narrative of heroism and sacrifice in this must-attend event for history buffs. Moderated by Mark Kershaw.
