15. It Runs in the Family: Georgia and Miriam Toews

What’s it like to be raised by a literary celebrity—to grow up in a household filled with books, and an internationally-acclaimed writing mentor at your dinner table? And on the flipside, when your child chooses the same profession, how can an author provide support and guidance while letting them walk their own path? Miriam Toews (A Truce That Is Not Peace) and Georgia Toews (Nobody Asked for This) are some of the few people who can tell us, and both are extremely successful authors in their own right. Interviewed by David A. Robertson, the mother-daughter duo will shed light on their literary family dynamic, their writing lives, and both of their radiant new books that explore grief, trauma, and the many kinds of love that bind us.

DAVID A. ROBERTSON is the bestselling author of the ongoing Misewa Saga, the forthcoming picture book Little Shoes, and new adult titles All the Little Monsters and 52 Ways to Reconcile, and the two-time winner of the Governor General’s Literary Award. Dave is a member of the Norway House Cree Nation and lives in Winnipeg.

Georgia Toews

GEORGIA TOEWS is the author of the critically acclaimed debut novel Hey, Good Luck Out There. She is also a writer for film and television. Born and raised in Winnipeg, she now lives in Toronto.

Miriam Toews

MIRIAM TOEWS is the author of the internationally acclaimed and bestselling novels Fight Night, Women Talking, All My Puny Sorrows, and one prior work of non-fiction, Swing Low: A Life. She is the winner of numerous awards and several of her novels have been made into feature films, including All My Puny Sorrows and the Oscar-nominated Women Talking. Miriam Toews lives in Toronto.
