Katherena Vermette is a Métis writer of poetry, fiction and children’s literature. Her first book, North End Love Songs, won the 2013 Governor General’s Literary Award for Poetry, and pays tribute to Winnipeg’s toughest and most notorious neighbourhood: the North End. In addition to writing, Vermette is also an indigenous activist and has worked extensively with marginalized groups and at risk-youth. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from UBC. The Break is her first novel, a powerful intergenerational family saga set, once again, in Winnipeg’s North End.
