We’re seeking volunteer photographers to support us throughout the year, and during the October Festival, by taking photos of the incredible conversations that happen on our stages.
Are you a passionate photographer who loves to find memorable moments, or take photos of some of the most celebrated writers in Canada today?
Captivating photos are an essential way we share the magic of the Festival with our audiences—and wider community. We’re looking for talented amateur photographers to join our pool of supporters, to occasionally take photos during our evening and weekend nighttime events throughout the year.
Our volunteers have captured international names such as Salman Rushdie, Jodi Picoult, Naomi Klein, Patrick deWitt and Ian Rankin, to name a few.

How does the photo pool work?
We have a range of Special Events throughout the year, plus a regular reading series—Incite—every January to May. And, of course, the Festival hosts more than 80+ events during its October Festival (October 21-27, 2019).
If you join our photo pool, we will email you with available event opportunities every month.
Photographers who respond will be selected on a first-come, first-serve basis.
What types of events do you require photos of?
Generally, our events include one or more authors on stage with artificial lighting, in conversation or reading. Our events take place in venues across Vancouver – from the Vancouver Public Library to the York Theatre to Granville Island Stage.
We also have opportunities for more interactive events such as our delicious fundraiser, Whisky & Words, every March.
What are the expectations for a volunteer photographer at an event?
We ask that photographers arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the event and follow our photography guidelines—such as no artificial shutter sounds, and not standing in front of the stage—to ensure our audiences aren’t disturbed. Guidelines will be provided to all successful volunteer applications.
Photographers are required only to stay for the first 30-45 minutes of the event—enough time to take photos of the author(s) and hosts. But, you are welcome to stay for the duration of the event. Please let us know in advance if you would like to stay!
We request that photos are sent to us within a week of the event as digital files.
How should I express my interest?
If you’re interested in being a volunteer photographer with the Vancouver Writers Fest, please send a brief note, with a link to your portfolio, with the subject line “Volunteer Photographer” to our Marketing & Publicity Manager, Zoe Grams, via info[at]writersfest.bc.ca.
