SUMMARY:R. F. Kuang: Katabasis
DESCRIPTION:Presented with the support of HarperCollins Canada. \nBestselling literary superstar R. F. Kuang joins us for one night only on the Vancouver stop of her Katabasis tour! \nHot off the trail of her 2023 novel\, Yellowface—an instant New York Times bestseller which has now been optioned by Lionsgate TV—Katabasis is a dark academia fantasy in which two graduate students must put aside their rivalry and journey to Hell to save their professor’s soul—perhaps at the cost of their own. \nWith nothing but the tales of Orpheus and Dante to guide them\, enough chalk to draw the Pentagrams necessary for their spells\, and the burning desire to make all their academic trauma mean anything\, rivals Alice Law and Peter Murdoch must set off across Hell to save a man they don’t even like: their thesis advisor\, Professor Jacob Grimes. \nGet your signed copy of this coveted new release. The cost of the ticket and book bundle includes: \n\nOne (1) pre-signed deluxe limited edition copy of Katabasis.\nA custom Canadian tour stamp (available at a table in the lobby; stamp your copy of Katabasis or other R.F. Kuang books!)\n\nRebecca can personalize only one book per person—either a pre-signed Katabasis or one (1) backlist title.\nNo photos are allowed in the signing line. \nThe author of Babel and The Poppy War trilogy joins us for an enchanting evening of conversation with Michelle Cyca\, and audience Q+A\, at the Granville Island Stage (1585 Johnston St) on September 13. \nA limited number of admission-only tickets (no book included) are available for those who face financial barriers and would like to request an accessibly priced ticket for this event. Contact boxoffice@writersfest.bc.ca to purchase.

SUMMARY:The Alma Lee Opening Night Event — Out of the Sun: Esi Edugyan in Conversation with Chantal Gibson
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT\n“What happens when we consider stories at the margins? How do they complicate our certainties of who we are\, as individuals\, as nations\, and as human beings?” Undoubtedly one of the most lauded writers in Canada today\, Esi Edugyan asks these essential questions in her 2021 Massey Lecture: Out of the Sun: On Race and Storytelling. She speaks about this latest non-fiction work with artist\, poet\, and author Chantal Gibson. Edugyan’s accolades include being a finalist for the Booker Prize\, the Governor General’s Literary Award\, the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize\, and the Orange Prize. She is one of only two people to have won the Scotiabank Giller Prize twice: first for Half-Blood Blues and\, most recently\, for Washington Black. This incisive analysis of the relationship between race and art cements her as one of the most exciting thinkers in the country. \n\nListen to CBC Radio IDEAS this fall for a unique audio experience from Esi Edugyan as she delivers the 2021 Massey Lecture\, Out of the Sun\, on CBC Radio One and CBC Listen. Visit CBC.ca/ideas for more information.
