Subscription Friday: Make the Most of Your Friday at the Festival

The Festival will host more than 80 events this month, and we want to make it easy for you to attend as many as possible. Have you heard about our deal for Friday, October 19?

What I’m (unofficially) calling Subscription Friday is the only day of the Festival that offers a discounted rate for anyone who wants to see four events in one day. That’s an entire day at the Festival! What could possibly be better?

This deal is open to everyone and simply requires adding four Friday events to your shopping cart on TheatreWire. The discount is applied automatically. If you’ve already purchased tickets to Friday events but want to take advantage of this offer and upgrade to the full day, call the Writers Fest at 604-681-6330.

Without further ado, here are my recommendations to making the most out of your Subscription Friday at Granville Island.

Event #1: 10:00-11:30am

Start the day off with a wake-up call. The Evolution of Man’s Jamil Jivani, Daemon Fairless and Rachel Giese reimagine how we can raise and educate boys, sparking conversations that are critical to our society’s wellbeing.

11:30am-1:00pm

Granville Island is full of lunch options. The Public Market is loaded with fresh produce and a diverse range of small food vendors that are perfect for a grab-and-go lunch. Feeling fancier? Across the street is Edible Canada Bistro (1596 Johnston St), serving exquisite cuisine made from locally-sourced products. Seafood lovers can pick between the equally delicious Go Fish (1501 West 1st Ave), a simple little eatery on the south side of the marina, and Tony’s Fish & Oyster Café (1511 Anderson St) in the Maritime Market.

Event #2: 1:00-2:30pm

Following lunch, settle in for a thought provoking triple-feature, The Interviews with Mark Medley, which will immerse you in Craig Davidson, Iain Reid and Sofka Zinovieff’s brilliance.

2:30-6:00pm

Use this window between events to enjoy the rest of Granville Island. You can stretch your legs with an incredible 22 km walk on the Seawall, taking in stunning sea and city views. Window shop to your heart’s content at the Maritime Market and, if you’re feeling inspired, visit the MAKE craft store to create custom shirts, mugs, water bottles and more. Art lovers can visit Eagle Spirit Gallery and view local indigenous artwork or explore Railspur alley to admire glassblowers, blacksmiths and other craftspeople at work. Or treat yourself to an early dinner at Bridges Bistro (1696 Duranleau St), choosing between the pub on their main level and a finer dining experience on the second floor.

Event #3: 6:00-7:15pm

Dive back into the Festival with an intimate conversation between your favourite authors. The Writing Life is your chance to hear Cherie Dimaline, Sabrina Mahfouz, Eden Robinson and Vivek Shraya discuss the secret lives behind their words with Waubgeshig Rice.

7:15-8:30pm

This is a perfect opportunity to visit the Festival Bookstore at Performance Works (1218 Cartwright St), where you can browse the Festival collection, lose yourself in all the fantastic reads, or have a friendly chat with your fellow enthusiastic booklovers.

Event #4: 8:30pm

End your day at Told with Humour, where Randy Boyagoda, Maureen Medved and Rawi Hage will leave you clutching your stomach in laughter, the maraschino cherry topping off your full day celebrating dynamic and inspiring literature with us.
