A Nation Divided: Tommy Orange & Gary Shteyngart in Conversation with Mark Medley

Tommy Orange, Gary Shteyngart

Wednesday, October 17
8:30pm
Studio 1398

1398 Cartwright St, Vancouver

North America is divided by contradictions, few more acute than gaping inequality. The richest 1 percent own more wealth than the bottom 90 percent combined—and the division falls along race lines, too. What is it like to live at both ends of this vast spectrum of wealth? How can the world’s wealthiest nations begin to address this gap? What role can fiction play? The Globe and Mail Opinions Editor, Mark Medley, speaks with award-winning author and satirist, Gary Shteyngart (Absurdistan, Lake Success) and NYT bestseller and current National Book Award nominee, Tommy Orange (There There), about their new novels, both of which grapple with the gross inequities in today’s Western world through character and story, humour and insight.

Presented in partnership with UBC Library.
