At least once in our lives, we reach the end of our rope. Relationships that once broadened our world feel narrow and tight. Careers contain more chores than dreams. A dark ennui begins. During moments of crisis, where do we find the resilience to walk away? What is the catalyst that leads to the brave reshaping of a life? Such questions are behind our insatiable demand for boundary-defying memoirs from writers whose journeys so often help us face our own trials. Jackie Kai Ellis walked away from a picture-perfect yet empty relationship into a career of travel, cooking and Paris living, as shared in The Measure of My Powers. Jan Redford has climbed both physical and metaphorical mountains as she describes in End of the Rope. Feel your world expand listening to these bold, visionary women.

Tara Henley is a writer and radio producer and books columnist for the Toronto Star.
