16th Annual Poetry & Short Story Contest Winners
The Vancouver Writers Fest is pleased to announce the winners of the 2014 Poetry & Short Story Writing Contest.
- First Place: "Kathleen" by Kate Hovey of California, USA
- Second Place: "Denis Falling Through Ice" by Matt Whiteman of Vancouver, BC
- First Place: "Scorpion Tattoo" by Ashley Little of Kelowna, BC
- Second Place: "The Corners Fade" by Jackie Bateman of North Vancouver, BC
A total of 185 poems an short stories were submitted to the contest this year. Contest judges were Toronto editor Catharine Chen, former Vancouver Poet Laureate Evelyn Lau and writer Michael Christie. All entries were judged blind.
About the Winning Authors
Kate Hovey is the author of three award-winning books of poetry for young readers: Arachne Speaks, Ancient Voices, and Voices of the Trojan War, published by Margaret K. McElderry Books, an imprint of Simon and Schuster. A contributor to Mythology and Modern Women Poets: Analysis, Reflection and Teaching, forthcoming from McFarland, her work has appeared most recently in The Bookwoman, The River Styx, The Ledge and The Lyric Moment, an anthology published by Tebot Bach.
Ashley Little is the author of three novels. Her work has won two BC Book Prizes, been longlisted for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, and been optioned for film and television. She lives in Kelowna with her partner and toy poodle.
Matt Whiteman was born in Ottawa and moved to Vancouver in 2004. He studied human geography and international development ethics at the University of British Columbia. He is currently working on his first manuscript of poems.
Jackie Bateman is a resident of North Vancouver, BC, Her novel Savour was published by Anvil Press in Oct 2014.
