5 Creatures, Kids and Community
Settle in for storytime spanning fantasy, whimsy and legend. In Alice Kuipers’ book, twins Violet and Victor work together, sometimes grudgingly, to write an extraordinary tale starring an evil witch on the loose in a fairytale kingdom. In Vikki VanSickle’s If I Had a Gryphon, Sam longs for a more exciting companion than her boring pet hamster, but who knew sasquatches were so messy and unicorns so shy? And in acclaimed artist and storyteller Roy Henry Vickers’ Peace Dancer, Tsimshian children who mistreat a crow anger the Chief of the Heavens with disastrous results not only for them but for the whole village. It’s a lesson about respecting all creatures in the natural world that youngsters will be spellbound by.

Discuss: What is your favourite animal? Do you own any pets? Why or why not? Discuss the responsibility and care that goes into taking care of a pet.
Have students draw what they consider the “perfect animal” (E.g: perfection in terms of strength, beauty, flight ability etc.) with characteristics and physical attributes of other animals.
