Yann Martel received international acclaim for Life of Pi, a global bestseller that won the 2002 Man Booker Prize and which became an Oscar-winning film. Born in Spain to Canadian parents, Martel studied philosophy at Trent University, worked at odd jobs—tree planter, dishwasher, security guard—and traveled widely before turning to writing. Part quest, part ghost story, part contemporary fable, The High Mountains of Portugal is a haunting exploration of great love and great loss, taking the reader on a road trip through twentieth century Portugal.
